There is a wealth of historic houses within a comfortable visiting distance of Park Farm as well as sites of ancient and Roman interest. Try the following sites:-
Greystones Farm and Nature Reserve (4 miles) At the south of Greystones Farm is Salmonsbury Camp Scheduled Ancient Monument, covering an area of 27 hectares. The remains of ramparts are still visible which once formed part of a fortified Iron Age town dating from the late Iron Age and later used by the Romans. However human use of the site can be traced back 5000 years to the Neolithic with evidence of a causewayed enclosure.
Chastleton House (5 miles) Chastleton House is one of England's finest and most complete Jacobean houses with a classic Elizabethan topiary garden and lawn where the rules of modern croquet were laid down. Entry is by timed ticket only so advanced booking is advised.
Rollright Stones (7 miles) The Rollright Stones is an ancient site located on the Oxfordshire/Warwickshire, just off the A44. It is an ancient complex of late Neolithic ceremonial stones, a place of mysterious beauty and subtle energies.
Lodge Park and Sherborne Estate (8 miles) Website : www.nationaltrust.org.uk Sherborne Estate is a beautiful Cotswold country estate containing a rare 17th-century grandstand, Lodge Park, and surrounded by water meadows and parkland rich in wildlife. Lodge Park is a rare 17th Century deer coursing grandstand.
Website : www.nationaltrust.org.uk Snowshill Manor is set in peaceful hillside gardens designed as a series of rooms and run on organic principles. The manor houses Charles Wade's collection of more than 22,000 objects from across the world. It also specialises in home-cooked lunches and cream teas.
Stanway House and Fountain (10 miles) Stanway House is a beautiful example of a Jacobean manor house built at the foot of the Cotswold escarpment. It is noted for its mellow, peaceful atmosphere, created by age, stone, architecture and furniture. The glory of Stanway water garden is the single jet fountain opened in 2004.
Chedworth Roman Villa (15 miles) Website : www.chedworthromanvilla.com Chedworth Roman Villa is the best site in the country for exploring and understanding the remains of a large country house of the Roman period. Over a mile of walls survives and several fine mosaics.
Upton House (19 miles) Website : www.nationaltrust.org.uk Upton House is a mansion presented its 1930's heyday giving a taste of a millionaire's lifestyle of the 20's and 30's. It features a collection of Old Master paintings, collections of English and French porcelain and an art Deco bathroom. The garden comprises terraced flower borders, herbaceous borders, tranquil water gardens and is home to the National Collection of asters.
Blenheim Palace (20 miles) Website : www.blenheimpalace.com Blenheim Palace is home to the 11th Duke and Duchess of Marlborough and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. Set in 2100 acres of beautiful parkland landscaped by Capability Brown, the magnificent Palace is surrounded by sweeping lawns, award-winning formal gardens and the Great Lake, offering an unforgettable day out for all.
Warwick Castle (26 miles) Warwick Castle has a history stretching back over a 1000 years to 914AD when a daughter of Alfred the Great ordered an earthen rampart to be built to protect the small hill top settlement of Warwick. These days it provides for an excellent day for all ages, featuring historical displays, military paraphernalia, dungeons, grand castle interiors, a pageant playground with picnic spots, a fabulous conservatory and extensive grounds. |
